Fogging in Agriculture
Every successful garden has a variety of tools to ensure smooth daily operations. Foggers are used to apply chemistries that target odors and pathogens. They can also be used to spray foliar nutrients. Having the right applicator is critical in optimizing the effectiveness of your chosen liquid solutions.
Unless you're a hobbyist gardener, most commercial growers will turn to foggers for efficiency and accuracy. Depending on the size of the garden, growers may purchase handheld or automated foggers to meet their IPM needs.
Thermal vs. ULV Foggers
At Terra Vera we recommend using Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) foggers, also known as cold foggers, with our solutions. Instead of using heat to create a fog (thermal foggers), ULV foggers use high pressure to turn liquid solutions into a fine mist. Because the mist is released under pressure, the liquid spreads across a wide area and can get into those hard to reach places. Here are some things to consider when selecting the fogger that's best for you.
Thermal Fogger Advantages
- Fog is highly visible, thick, and cloudy, making it easier to avoid contact with solutions
- Particle size can be as small as half a micron in diameter depending on the nozzle used, making it easier to achieve significant density in those tough to reach areas
- Use a smaller amount of liquid solution and can fog the same sized area as an ULV fogger but in less time
Thermal Fogger Disadvantages
- Require some sort of fuel to power the heating system, which means extra operational costs and time spent refilling
- Risk of fire associated with thermal foggers, especially when used indoors
ULV Fogger Advantages
- Does not require fuel to use, reducing operational costs and saving time
- May allow you to adjust particle size for different applications
- Safer to use indoors
- Options for automated fogging, greatly reducing labor hours
ULV Fogger Disadvantages
- Fog is thinner and may be difficult to see when applying
- Particle size is larger and may be between 5-50 microns
Why We Recommend ULV Foggers
Since thermal foggers utilize high temperatures, certain liquid solutions may be impacted in the process of creating the fog. To ensure the efficacy of our activated amino solutions, we recommend using ULV foggers. During numerous field tests, we have found ULV foggers to be highly effective in applying our solutions on plants, equipment, and HVAC systems. Below is a list of our recommended ULV foggers.
